Italian Vanitas Skull Figure Bust

This Vanitas Skull Figure Bust is dated to the late 17th century and was part of an exhibition humorously named ‘ Marble Sculpture from 350 B.C. to Last Week’. This exhibition or ‘survey’ includes “Greek and Roman antiques, Neoclassical sculptures, and works by modern and contemporary European and American artists.”

I find it strange to gaze upon this Vanitas Skull Figure Bust, knowing it’s old, as the contrast of smooth white marble and skull seems like such contemporary vision. It seems through the ages there have always been guys with strange ideas.
