Bone Beneath – Southern Sea Lion Skull

sea lin male skullGuessing the species of an animal from a skull alone will prove difficult for most. Just take this Southern Sea Lion Skull for example. No chance I would have guessed correctly. Would you have? This seal may earn its name from its hairy mane but looking at the skull alone reminds me of a lion. It’s damn fierce looking.

The male can grow up to 2.7 metres long and can weigh up to a staggering 350kgs. The females are a much smaller at 1.8-2m and 150kgs. Their skulls are also considerably different. Otherwise known as sexual dimorphism.

The Southern Sea Lion, also known as South American Sea lion (read more on Wicki), can be found along the majority of South American coasts. These seals are known locally as Lobo Marino, meaning Sea Wolf.

A replica of this skull can be purchased from Skulls Unlimited.
