My Skull Tattoos

I went to South Africa a few months ago to spend my 30th with my friends and family and had arranged with my younger brother to get matching skull tattoos. It was my bro’s first tattoo and I had already convinced him that skulls would be the best first tattoo to get! We also wanted to get a tattoo which represented our family and thought 3 skulls would be perfect to represent our dad, mom and each other.

We made a few phone calls and managed to book a slot at SA Hardcore Tattoo in Parkhurst. The team of guys there were very helpful and did a sterling job – cheers guys!

This amazing digital illustration was created by Jason E Bennett as his attempt at redesigning the opening fight of Princess Mononoke for a Miyazaki-related illustration challenge on CGHub. This movie was recommended to me by a friend and now after seeing this work I will definitely be making plans to watch it, as an illustration this good must be inspired by a pretty damn interesting film.

Quick Intro Clip of some London Street Art by Nychos

I walk past these most days and now that I’ve watched the video’s I can’t believe what an amazing talent this man is.

NYCHOS is incredible and his work can be seen in most major cities – just watching his video’s now and the man is a graffiti machine, I still don’t know how he does it. Through Rabbit Eye Movement he has been mentioned on most high-profile art blogs and websites and is definitely one of the most well-known street artists of our generation.

Nychos’ work focussing heavily on dissection, anatomy, skeletons and skulls. His style is instantly recognisable and even if you don’t know the ‘art scene,’ once you’ve seen his work you will know straight away when you’ve seen it again. He is able to create art on a variety of mediums including A3 prints to huge fantastic murals which are cartoon-like in their execution but the level of detail he gets out of a tin of spray paint is mind-boggling.

Even though the main focus of his art is not skulls, what kind of Appreciation Society would we be if we didn’t mention him and give you the chance to see his creations and some great little vids too which show you some process shots.

Monday mornings are great when you get to feast your eyes on these amazing 3D digital skull illustrations by Antonio Tudisco. Antonio is a German artist and graphic designer and creates a variety of 3d illustrations. His work is a vibrant kaleidoscope of 3D magic and has done graphic art for a number of big-name brands including Nike, Vans, Nestle, Coca Cola, Reebok and MTV. If you are this good at digital then you don’t have much else to worry about.

These 3D digital skull illustrations are bad-ass. Say no more.

Chitipati Skull Figures

Fancy splashing some cash over the weekend? Then why not swing by Christie’s and purchase yourself on of these 19th Century Chitipati Skull Figures for a ‘Price Realized’ $47,500. Ok, I’m not sure what that actually means but the website does state that this is the “hammer price plus buyer’s premium” but then there is also some ‘Estimate’ amount of $4,000 – $6,000. Confused.

That aside these Chitipati Skull Figures are silver plated bronze figures created in Tibet. They also “represent two Buddhist ascetics who were so deeply absorbed in meditation that they were unaware of their own death, and changed into wrathful death spirits with vows of eternal vengeance.”
