BEARDED SKULL ON T-SHIRTS

Bittersweet Skull T-shirt

Here’s another skull by us, Mr Four Fingers, and this time in the form of a t-shirt design called Bittersweet. We were invited to join the Maison Twenty collective to design some t-shirts for their collection and we obviously had to do a skull one. This skull t-shirt is one of many designs from Maison Twenty and is currently on sale at for £55 through their online shop.

1899 – 1900′s Skull Calendar

This old-school skull calendar was one of my favourite parts of Richard Harris’ exhibition at the Welcome Collection called Death: A Self Portrait. The illustrations were done by Louis Crucius (or Crusius) between 1882 & 1890 and were sold to the Antikamnia, a chemical company based in St Louis in 1890. Antikamnia then used the illustrations in an aggressive marketing campaign including these calendars.

Funny thing is, well not at that funny but you’ll see the irony, this chemical company used these ‘dance-of-death’ inspired illustrations in calendars, sample packs and postcards to market antikamnia medicines which contained the coal tar derivative, acetanilid, an anti-fever drug with pain relieving properties somewhat related to paracetamol, but which would be later shown to be a toxic compound.

Skull Prints from Face Off Exhibition

Street Anatomy and Skull-a-Day recently celebrated Skull Appreciation Day by holding the FACE OFF Exhibition, where artists were allowed to submit a skull and then it was dissected in half and joined with another skull, from a different artist to bring you an amazing collection of skull prints and art! Brilliant idea BTW.

These skull prints are by the main artists who were invited to be part of the Face Off Exhibition.

Red Skull

You would not really know it from the Captain America movie but Red Skull, Captain America’s arch nemesis, is actually ranked as “IGN’S 14th Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time”. (Wicki). But we are here today to show you this awesome illustration of Red Skull that captures that darkness that I felt the movie failed to capture, at least in the make up department. This is a pencil drawing by Leinil Yu (1st image) and inks (brush, crow quill and tech pens) by Blaster Kid.

Skull Portrait by Mr Four Fingers

We have posted about some of our own skull work before that we create under the name of Mr Four Fingers and here is the latest edition to the Face Skull series, Niko. This skull portrait is a pencil drawing that was finished digitally with colour.

I also used a resin cast of a skull to try get the right angle to suit the photograph supplied, which a generally don’t do as the subject is normally facing the camera directly but as you can see here the subject is slightly off centre and it was shot at a slightly lower angle. Gaaaahhhhhh.

The Skull Man

Whilst stumbling about on the net I found this creepy looking guy called The Skull Man, who is the main character in a Shōnen manga series created by Shotaro Ishinomori in 1970. It caused a sensation as The Skull Man was the first of the antiheroes to be seen in manga, as the guy would sacrifice innocents in his quest for vengeance.(Wicki).

In 2007 Studio Bones adapted the Skull Man into an anime TV series which can be bought on Amazon for $28.78
